Un estudio exploratorio de las actitudes de estudiantes universitarios acerca de las lenguas indígenas y los derechos lingüísticos de sus hablantes en México

Abstract

In this paper, the results of an investigation about Mexican university students’ attitudes towards indigenous languages and the linguistic rights of their speakers (Desmet, 2004) are discussed. The study was carried out following the theoretical framework of “linguistic conflict” proposed by Ninyoles (1972). The profile of the participants in the study is presented, as well as the instrument designed in order to gather the relevant information. Furthermore, the theoretical framework is introduced to show the tools used to analyze and interpret the data. Then, a detail analysis of the different types of attitudes the subjects have towards indigenous languages and Spanish is shown. Finally, it is concluded that the attitudes found in the participants are not to be considered or treated as isolated phenomena but rather as diglossic ideologies, according to Ninyoles.
